Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Two Including LAPD Cop

A police officer has been injured in a Los Angeles car accident after he was struck by an 85-year-old driver in Van Nuys the afternoon of November 29, 2009. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the officer had stopped to issue a citation to a motorist he had pulled over, when the elderly woman struck both the officer and the car that got pulled over. The collision threw the officer onto the driver's windshield, LAPD officials said. The officer sustained head injuries and was transported to an area hospital. He is listed in stable condition. The other person who was pulled over suffered a knee injury and was also taken to a hospital. The senior driver, who apparently caused the accident, was uninjured.

Police Officer Sustains Head Injuries

I hope and pray that the LAPD officer did not sustain major head injuries in this car crash. I also wish the other victim the very best for a quick and complete recovery from his injuries. Please keep both these injured victims in your prayers.

In this particular case, it is not clear how or why the elderly driver crashed into the officer and the other victim. Officials have ruled the collision as an accident. But in many car accident cases, that only means that the driver will not face criminal charges. In a civil case, that individual could still be held liable for causing the accident and the injuries.

What Caused this Car Accident?

In this incident, there are still some unanswered questions. Was the elderly driver distracted at the time of the accident? Was she driving recklessly or had she been negligent in any other way, at the time? Did the elderly driver have a preexisting medical condition?

If there was negligence on the part of the elderly driver here and if she is found to have been at-fault, then she could be held liable for the injuries caused to the police officer as well as the other victim. In such cases, victims would be well-advised to consult with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who can better explain their legal rights and options. Car accident victims are usually able to seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy or any other related costs.
