Car Crash Results in Major Injuries for San Bernardino Pedestrian

A man who was severely injured in a pedestrian accident in San Bernardino has been identified as 21-year-old Christopher Neal. The San Bernardino County Sun reports that the major injury collision occurred the night of July 22, 2010 on State Route 62 in Twentynine Palms. Authorities said Neal was walking in the eastbound lanes of the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle going in the same direction, which was driven by 46-year-old Lori McNay. Officials are investigating the cause of the crash. Neal was transported to a nearby medical center for treatment of major injuries.

Roadway Debris Causes Sacramento Motorcycle Crash

Debris on the roadway may have caused a motorcycle accident that left a Sacramento police officer with injuries. The Sacramento City News reports the motorcycle accident happened the morning of July 26, 2010 at the intersection of Third Street and Richards Boulevard. The officer was traveling north on Third Street and began to turn on to Richards Boulevard when his motorcycle slid on debris. The motorcycle crashed and the police officer injured his left ankle.

Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Two

Two people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident on July 27, 2010, the Pasadena Star-News reports. California Highway Patrol officials say the chain reaction collision involving at least six vehicles was triggered by a semi-truck that rear-ended one of the vehicles on the 210 Freeway at Lake Avenue in Pasadena. An off-duty CHP officer and a 49-year-old woman were injured. An investigation is ongoing.

Toddler Killed in Fresno DUI Collision

Angel Lopez, 4, was killed in a car accident in Fresno the night of July 23, 2010, which officials say, involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in The Fresno Bee, 32-year-old Rodolfo Rangle, driving a 1994 Toyota east on Avenue 440, ran a stop sign at Road 120 and collided with a 2001 Dodge driven by 55-year-old Evelyn Hernandez. California Highway Patrol officials arrested Rangle on suspicion of drunk driving.

San Francisco City Employee Critically Injured in Car Accident

A parking enforcement officer was seriously injured in a San Francisco car accident the morning of July 23, 2010 when his Cushman vehicle was hit. The San Francisco Examiner reports that the crash occurred at the intersection of Polk and Ellis streets. Officials say another driver ran a red light while going westbound on Ellis Street and broadsided the Cushman vehicle. The parking officer was then ejected from his vehicle and badly injured as it landed on him. The victim who was wearing a helmet is expected to survive the serious injury crash.

Semi trucks can easily weigh 80,000 pounds when fully loaded. Imagine what it is like to share the road with more than 100,000 of these monstrous vehicles steered by drivers who are under the influence of drugs and alcohol?

According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) Roadcheck 2008, one percent of truck drivers who were stopped during random checks were under the influence of some type of drug or alcohol. If you multiply one percent times the number of truck drivers on our roads every day, that's nearly 100,000 truckers who are driving while impaired.

A 44-year-old man was killed in a Long Beach car accident after he was struck by a distracted driver on the 405 Freeway the morning of July 25, 2010. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal crash occurred when the driver of a 2004 Ford Explorer SUV, a Huntington Beach man, took his eyes off the road to adjust his radio.

Fatal Car Crash in Fresno

A driver running a stop sign at an intersection may have led to a fatal car accident in Fresno that killed two people the morning of July 16, 2010, CBS News reports. The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of American Avenue and Temperance when the driver of a Buick ran a stop sign and struck the Jeep. The driver of the Jeep as well as a woman, who was a passenger in Buick, died as a result. Officials are investigating the incident.

Orange County Motorcycle Crash Causes Injuries

A motorcycle accident in Orange County involving a big-rig caused serious injuries to one person the afternoon of July 20, 2010. The Orange County Register reports that the injury crash occurred at the intersection of Raymond and Chapman Avenues. The truck was making a right turn on to Chapman and the motorcycle was headed east on Chapman. The injured motorcyclist was taken to an area hospital. Police are looking into what caused this collision.

I sympathize with this injured rider for what he is going through at this time. I hope he has not suffered major injuries and pray that he has a quick and full recovery.

Driver Injured in Los Angeles Car Accident

A man was seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident after his Audi A4 was struck by a box truck on the shoulder of the 60 Freeway. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the collision occurred on July 22, 2010 near Nogales Street, in Rowland Heights. California Highway Patrol officials say the Audi was stopped on the right shoulder of the eastbound side of the freeway when a box truck veered into it. During the injury crash, the box truck ran over the rear of the car.

Fresno Greyhound Bus Accident Kills Six

Six people are dead and at least 34 others have been injured in a Greyhound bus accident in Fresno the morning of July 22, 2010, according to a CNN report. California Highway Patrol officials say the fatal bus crash occurred on the northbound Highway 99 just outside downtown Fresno, near McKinley Street, when the driver of the Sacramento-bound Greyhound bus swerved to avoid an overturned SUV in the fast lane. The bus struck the SUV and another vehicle, before crashing into the center divider of the highway, rolling down an embankment and hitting a tree. Six people have been pronounced dead and at least four have been critically injured. Six others sustained moderate injuries and 24 suffered minor injuries, according to latest reports.

DUI Collision in Sonoma County Kills Two

Beverly Jones and Nancy McBride, both 77-year-old Cloverdale residents, were killed in a San Francisco car accident after the vehicle in which they were passengers was struck by a suspected drunk driver. According to a Bay City News report, the fatal collision occurred the evening of July 18, 2010 on Geyserville Avenue just east of Highway 101 in Sonoma County.

DUI Collision Kills Woman in Walnut Creek

Kathleen Moorhead, 57, was killed in a San Francisco car accident after she was struck by a suspected drunk driver the evening of July 17, 2010. According to a Bay City News report, the fatal crash occurred on Treat Boulevard near Bancroft Road in Walnut Creek. Police say the driver of a pickup truck, who was traveling east on Treat Boulevard, lost control of the vehicle and crossed a median into the westbound lanes.

Los Angeles Car Accident Kills Two

Jason Sorg and Oscar Mendoza, 23, were killed in a Los Angeles car accident after their vehicles collided head-on on the Pacific Coast Highway, the morning of July 16, 2010. According to an Associated Press news report, Sorg was driving his Saturn south in the northbound lanes of the highway at about 80 mph, when he crashed into a Mustang driven by Mendoza. In addition to the fatal injuries, Mendoza's passenger, 24-year-old Jesus Saenz, sustained a broken arm, leg and a concussion. Several witnesses reported to police that they saw Sorg driving erratically moments before the crash. Police are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Long Beach Car Accident Injures Two Pedestrians

A DUI collision in Long Beach resulted in injuries for two women who were walking in a marked crosswalk near the intersection of 2nd Street and Pacific Coast Highway on July 11, 2010. KTLA News reports that the driver of a Land Rover went through a red light and caused the collision. Although one of the victims was dragged by the suspect vehicle, the female driver only stopped momentarily and then left the scene of the crash. Police however caught up with 37-year-old hit-and-run driver and arrested her, thanks to a witness who followed the Land Rover and called authorities. The victims, who were taken to an area hospital, sustained injuries, but are expected to survive.

It is indeed fortunate that neither of these women was more seriously injured. I hope and pray that they recover quickly and completely.

Two Injured in DUI Collision

A car accident in Chico caused injuries to two people the night of July 8, 2010. The accident occurred in the westbound lanes of Highway 32, when Jacob Michael Peterson, 23, made a U-turn in front of a 2002 Chevy pickup truck. One person was booked on suspicion of DUI.

DUI Hit-and-Run Collision Causes Major Injuries

Hemet Police Officer Doug Barrett, 30, sustained major injuries in a hit-and-run collision, which officials say, was caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, the driver of a Honda Accord broadsided the police car the night of July 13, 2010, at the intersection of State Street and Acacia Avenue in Hemet. Witnesses told police that the driver of the Honda ran a red light. Both cars crashed into a third car that was waiting at a red light at the intersection.

Santa Maria Car Accident Injures Police Officer

Jeff Lopez, a Santa Maria police officer, sustained injuries in a Santa Maria car accident the night of July 13, 2010 after his cruiser was struck by a man who ran a stop sign at a local intersection. According to a news report in the Santa Maria Times, the injury collision occurred at the intersection of Morrison Avenue and Pine Street. Jeff Lopez's patrol car was sideswiped by a vehicle driven by 53-year-old Robert Thomas Kelly Jr. who ran a stop sign at Pine Street. Kelly was also arrested by police on suspicion of felony DUI. Lopez was transported to a local hospital for head trauma. However, he did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

CHP Pursuit Ends in Major Injury San Jose Car Accident

Six people were injured, one critically, in a San Jose car accident the afternoon of July 13, 2010, after a man being pursued by CHP officers ran a red light at an intersection and broadsided another vehicle. According to a KTVU news report, the major injury collision occurred at the intersection of East San Fernando and South 10th streets, when 24-year-old Bernardino Cuevas ran a red light and crashed into a Mitsubishi Mirage driven by a 35-year-old woman, who was with her three children.

San Francisco Area Car Accident Injures Six

Six pedestrians were injured in a San Francisco car accident after they were struck by a driver who was learning to drive. According to a Bay City News report, the serious injury accident occurred the night of July 10, 2010 at the intersection of Wetmore Road and Vallecitos Road in Livermore. One pedestrian was airlifted to an area hospital while two others were transported by ambulance to another medical center. Three other pedestrians sustained minor injuries.

Police said 20-year-old Farhat Mohammed, the driver, was traveling west on Wetmore, when she attempted a left turn onto Vallecito and struck the six pedestrians in the crosswalk. Police say Mohammed had a valid learner's permit and was accompanied by a licensed driver. An investigation is ongoing.

Oakland Car Accident Proves Fatal for Motorcyclist

A 40-year-old San Francisco man was killed in an Oakland car accident after crashing with a car at a street intersection the afternoon of July 4, 2010. According to a news report in the Contra Costa Times, the fatal motorcycle collision occurred at the intersection of West Grand Avenue and Magnolia Street. A 31-year-old man driving a Mercedes-Benz sedan east on Grand made a left turn in front of the motorcycle, which was traveling west. The motorcyclist was thrown off his bike on to the pavement. His injuries were fatal. An investigation is ongoing.

Hit-and-Run Collision in Orange County Causes Injuries

A hit-and-run collision in Garden Grove resulted in serious injuries for a bicyclist the morning of July 2, 2010, The Orange County Register reports. The accident occurred at the intersection of Magnolia Street and Chapman Avenue. The bicyclist suffered severe injuries including a broken leg. He was taken to a local medical center. The vehicle that struck the bicyclist did not stop at the scene. Police are asking that anyone who saw the accident or has information about the hit-and-run collision contact local police at 714-741-5823.

San Diego Car Accident Possibly Caused by Street-Racing

A man, identified as 18-year-old sailor Douglas Hill, lost both his legs in a San Diego car accident on July 5, 2010. 10news reports that the major injury collision was very likely the result of street-racing. California Highway Patrol officials are attempting to locate other vehicles, which they believe were racing Hill's red Ford Mustang.

The crash occurred when Hill lost control of the car at a San Diego area freeway interchange. Both of Hill's legs had to be amputated after he was ejected from the vehicle. A passenger, 19-year-old Joshua Songer, was also ejected, but did not sustain life-threatening injuries. Hill remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Riverside Car Accident Proves Fatal for Woman

Nichole Mena, 29, was killed in a Riverside car accident after a minivan collided head-on with her car the night of July 6, 2010. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, Mena was driving a 1996 Acura Integra west on Highway 74, near the intersection of Calvert Avenue and Four Seasons Boulevard, in Hemet. Mamdouh Salem, 43, was in a 2008 Nissan Quest minivan heading east on the highway and close to the Four Seasons gated community, when he crossed into the westbound lanes and struck the Integra. Mena sustained massive internal injuries and died at the scene. Three young children in the minivan -- Adam Salem, 3, Zain Salem, 4, and Zachary Salem, 1 -- were not seriously injured.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Nichole Mena for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. I'm also relieved to hear that the three children in the minivan were unharmed.

DUI Collision in Tulare County Proves Fatal

Rocio Martinez Lopez, 36, was killed in a car accident in Tulare County after her vehicle was hit by a suspected drunk driver, the Fresno Bee reports. California Highway Patrol officials say the fatal crash occurred the night of July 1, 2010, when Lopez was driving her 2007 Honda Civic east on Highway 190. At the time, a driver of a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup, who was southbound on Road 152, ran a stop sign and struck Lopez's Honda, officials said. The driver of the pickup was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Both he and his 29-year-old passenger, Jose Corrales-Delgado, were transported to an area hospital with major injuries.

San Diego DUI Collision Causes Injuries

Three drivers were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in connection with a San Diego car accident that involved four vehicles. According to a news report in the North County Times, the injury collision occurred on the 5 Freeway in Encinitas, near Leucadia Boulevard. California Highway Patrol officials say Todd C. Winter was driving a Ford Focus when he crashed into a big-rig the morning of July 2, 2010. Winter then abandoned his car and his passenger 30-year-old Sean Elder, who was in the front seat of the Ford, which remained in oncoming traffic lanes. The driver of the big-rig also fled the scene.

Ventura Car Accident Injures Two

Two 18-year-olds who were injured in a truck accident in Ventura County have been identified as Joshua David and Natalie Pierson. The Ventura County Star reports that the accident occurred the night of June 28, 2010 when a large truck that was stopped on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway failed to yield right-of-way to the van David was driving and pulled into the roadway. David's vehicle struck the trailer. David suffered broken bones, cuts and bruises while Pierson sustained minor injuries. California Highway Patrol officials are investigating this crash.

It is indeed fortunate that these two young people were not seriously injured in this accident. This could have been a lot worse. I hope and pray that David and Pierson recover soon from whatever injuries they have sustained.

Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Police Officer

A hit-and-run collision in Torrance caused injuries to a police officer who was trying to make a traffic stop the afternoon of June 28, 2010, the Daily Breeze reports. The injury accident happened near the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and 242nd Street when the officer was trying to stop the vehicle. However, he ended up striking the vehicle he was about to stop and then slammed into a parked car. The other vehicle fled the scene but was located shortly afterward. Its driver, who has not yet been identified, was booked on suspicion of hit-and-run. The officer had to be removed from his cruiser and taken to an area hospital. He is expected to survive.

Police officers put their lives on the line for the safety and well-being of the communities that they serve. This incident is yet another reminder of how dangerous their jobs can be. We are extremely grateful to these brave men and women for their service to our communities. I pray for the speedy recovery of this injured Torrance police officer

Good Samaritan Injured in Sacramento Hit-and-Run Collision

Daniel Zipay, 28, was injured in a Sacramento car accident after he was struck at an accident site while trying to put out reflective warning triangles. According to a news report in the Sacramento Bee, Zipay was a Good Samaritan trying to help at the scene of a crash at the Interstate 5 to Interstate 80 interchange. The driver of the vehicle that hit Zipay fled the scene. Zipay was transported to a local hospital with a broken leg and pelvis. California Highway Patrol officials are trying to locate the hit-and-run driver and vehicle. The earlier injury crash was caused by a suspected drunk driver who remained at the scene. Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is asked to call CHP investigators at 916-338-6710.

My heart goes out to Zipay and his family for what they are going through at this time. Here was a man who was trying to help other injured victims and was injured himself by a hit-and-run driver. Anaheim Car Accident Causes Major Injuries

Three people were seriously injured in an Anaheim car accident the morning of June 30, 2010, after two vehicles collided on Tustin Avenue. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, a 28-year-old man driving a Honda Civic at a high rate of speed, in the center turn lane on Tustin Avenue, went into oncoming southbound traffic and crashed head-on into a Toyota 4Runner SUV occupied by a 70-year-old driver and his wife. All three sustained major injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital. Police suspect the Honda's driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. An investigation is ongoing.
