St. Louis Missouri School Bus Accident Kills Two, Injures 50

Two teenagers -- 15-year-old Jessica Brinker, a John F. Hodge High School student, and 19-year-old Daniel Schatz -- were killed in a St. Louis Missouri school bus accident the morning of August 5, 2010. According to a news report in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, two school buses filled with high school band members heading to the Six Flags amusement park crashed with a semi-truck and another pickup truck on the Interstate 44. Brinker was in the last row of one of the school buses, while Schatz was driving the pickup truck.

Tragic Bus Crash

At least 50 others were injured, including one 16-year-old student who is fighting for her life. The students from the two school buses were transported to several area hospitals. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time. Federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are still piecing together the details of this catastrophic crash and how it occurred.

I offer my deepest condolences to the families and friends of young Jessica Brinker and Daniel Schatz for their tremendous loss. My heart also goes to the injured victims of this catastrophic bus accident. I hope none of them has suffered major injuries and pray for their speedy and complete recovery. Apparently, the members of the high school band had worked through the summer selling candy and washing cars to pay for their annual summer trip to Six Flags. A fun trip ended in unspeakable tragedy for these students! They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Complex Investigation

NTSB officials say they are going to look into issues concerning school bus safety, highway work zone safety and the potential for crash-sensing devices on school buses and other commercial vehicles that would warn drivers or even automatically apply the brakes. Based on news reports, it appears that the chain reaction crash involving the four vehicles -- including the two school buses -- occurred when the large truck suddenly slowed down while passing through a freeway construction zone. The slowing truck tractor, which was not towing a trailer, was struck by the pickup, which was then rear-ended by the first school bus. That school bus was then struck from behind by the second bus.

In this particular case, there are many unanswered questions at the moment. Who was at fault for causing the initial collision? Did the driver of the big rig stop too abruptly and not give the other vehicles behind him sufficient time to stop? How fast were the school buses traveling? Was the driver of the pickup truck speeding , distracted or otherwise negligent? This is certainly bound to be a complex investigation involving several agencies, numerous victims and witnesses.

Protecting Victims' Rights

The injured victims in this case would be well-advised to contact an experienced St. Louis Missouri personal injury lawyer like James Brown, who will stay on top of this complex investigation and make sure that their legal rights are protected. It would be in the best interests of victims and their families to refrain from talking to insurance adjusters, representatives for the school district or other parties.

They should also stay away from signing papers or entering into agreements. Those affected by this terrible incident, and seeking the guidance of a skilled and knowledgeable auto accident attorney to represent them, need to look no further than James Brown.
