Accident North of Los Angeles Involving Crew of Firefighting Inmates Injures 12, Kills 2

The following is a guest post by George Williams, head blogger for Colorado car accident attorney Daniel R. Rosen.

A truck carrying a prison inmate fire crew was traveling along a highway north of Los Angeles last Tuesday when a Subaru wagon crossed the yellow line. The resulting car accident left one person in each vehicle dead and many others hospitalized, according to authorities.

Tracy Young of KETK News reports:

Authorities are investigating why the elderly man driving the Subaru wagon with Nevada plates veered across the yellow line on Tuesday, triggering a crash that caused the truck to overturn on Highway 138 near Interstate 5 south of Gorman, California Highway Patrol spokesman David Lutz said.

According to California prisons spokesman George Kostyrko, the inmate who died in the crash was Fernando Sanchez from San Diego County. He was only 25 and up for parole in less than 2 years.

Special equipment was required to get the remaining inmates out of the overturned truck

The crew of inmates was one of four firefighting groups of inmates based in a camp not far from the scene of the accident. The camp is one of ten located across LA County. The inmates who reside in the camps help battle wildfires and also work on fuel clearing and construction projects when they are not fighting major fires.
