Unsafe Left Turn Causes Fatal Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident

June 15, 2011

Wrongful death attorney in CaliforniaSteve Campos, 25, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident when his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck whose driver made an unsafe left turn. According to a City News Service report, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred at the intersection of Vanowen Street and Etiwanda Avenue in Reseda, the afternoon of June 13, 2011. Campos was riding a Yamaha R6 motorcycle westbound when a 1987 Nissan pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Roberto Casillas turned in front of the motorcycle. Officials determined that Casillas failed to yield right-of-way to the oncoming motorcycle. Campos was pronounced dead shortly after the crash in a nearby hospital. Casillas faces murder charges in connection with this fatal car accident.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Steve Campos following this tragic car accident. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 42 people were killed and 1,289 were injured in Los Angeles motorcycle accidents. During that same year, 114 fatalities and 2,934 injuries occurred as a result of Los Angeles County motorcycle accidents.

The Law Relating to Left Turns

Authorities believe the driver of the pickup truck failed to yield right-of-way to the oncoming motorcyclist while making a left turn. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."

Fault and Liability

In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, the family of a deceased car accident victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical and funeral expenses, lost future income and benefits, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. Families of deceased victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that the negligent parties are held accountable.

I heard that Steve Campos was married two days before he was killed in this accident on Van Owen Street at Etiwanda (I witnessed it at the time). Also, the driver of the Nissan was heavily impaired and is in jail on charges of murder; being help for $1.2M bond.
