San Diego Hit-and-Run Car Accident Severely Injures Pedestrian
A 57-year-old man was critically injured in a San Diego car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver, the night of June 28, 2011. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the major injury collision occurred on Mission Gorge Road, near Old Cliffs Road, in Allied Gardens. The man was found by officials lying in the westbound bicycle lane with serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital. Officials say he appears to have been hit by a vehicle whose driver did not stop. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to the injured victim of this hit-and-run car accident. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 23 fatalities and 533 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in the city of San Diego. Countywide, pedestrian accidents claimed 63 lives and caused 998 injuries, during the same year.
Hit-and-Run
If the details of this news report are accurate, it appears that the driver involved in this crash struck and critically injured the pedestrian and then left him lying on the roadway. It is not clear how long the man had been lying on the roadway before officials spotted him and got him to the hospital. Had he received prompt medical attention, he may have been in stable condition by now. Instead, he is fighting for his life.
Leaving the scene of an injury car accident is not only inhumane and irresponsible, but it is also illegal. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."
