A 51-year-old Adelanto man was killed in a San Bernardino County truck accident after a big-rig that was hauling hazardous materials rear-ended the victim's car on a Victorville roadway. According to a news report in the Victorville Daily Press, the fatal crash occurred near the intersection of Air Expressway and Phantom East the afternoon of July 30, 2012. Officials say the big rig collided with the sedan a few feet from the intersection's crosswalk.

The truck drove into the back of the car and both vehicles came to rest in the desert field alongside the roadway. The truck was on its way to the Dr. Pepper Snapple Plant and the 1990 Cadillac Deville, according to a news report in The San Bernardino County Sun, was disabled and had its emergency lights on. The driver of the Cadillac was killed and the truck's driver, who was a carrier for Estes Express Lines, reportedly suffered minor injuries.

Alexis Brooks, 28, was killed in a Los Angeles County car accident after two cars struck her as she was crossing the street. According to a KABC news report, the fatal car accident occurred the night of July 23, 2012 near the intersection of Western Avenue and 108th Street. Police say Brooks was crossing the street when she was hit by a car and then thrown into another car traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the first car, 37-year-old Kathleen Knox, got out of her car. At the time, someone pulled a gun a started firing at her. Knox then got back in the car and called 911. Eyewitnesses have apparently corroborated her account. The second driver also talked to the police. Authorities have not been able to locate the shooter. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at 323-820-6700.

Four people were injured in a car crash in Hemet, which officials say, involved two vehicles colliding at a street intersection. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the injury crash occurred the afternoon of July 26, 2012 when a Chevy van collided with a Ford Fusion at the busy intersection of State Street and Devonshire Avenue. The driver of the Fusion, Diana Vargas, was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the van was identified as Teresa Medina.

Officials say Medina was headed south on State Street when the van collided with the Fusion, which was eastbound on Devonshire Avenue. The van rolled over south of the intersection. Three teen passengers from the Chevy van were transported to area hospitals as well. Neither driver was immediately cited. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

A Los Angeles car crash involving four vehicles resulted in injuries for 10 people. According to a City News Service report, the injury crash occurred on the northbound 110 Freeway at Adams Boulevard in South Los Angeles the night of July 25, 2012. California Highway Patrol officials say some of the injured victims were ejected from the vehicles. Nine out of the 10 injured victims were transported to area hospitals. Two of the patients suffered serious injuries and seven others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One of the victims declined to be taken to the hospital. CHP is still investigating this crash.

Dondi Allen Quimby, 42, was killed in a San Bernardino County car accident, which officials say, was caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal DUI crash occurred on Lytle Creek Road in Lytle Creek during the early morning hours of July 22, 2012. Officials say Quimby was pushing a bicycle on a narrow shoulder when a 1997 Ford Thunderbird struck him. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash. The 22-year-old driver, Matthew Harry Eldridge of Rancho Cucamonga, was arrested and booked on suspicion felony drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter.

Four people were injured in a Los Angeles traffic collision that involved two vehicles and a Metro bus. According to a news report in Blog Downtown, the injury collision occurred the morning of July 23, 2012 in the 700 block of Figueroa Street. The report states that a Metro Silver Line bus that was northbound on Figueroa hit a car that was moving around the bus to make a right turn. The car that was hit by the bus then struck another adjacent vehicle. The bus driver and three passengers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials are looking into what caused this crash.

A 71-year-old man was killed in a Pasadena car accident after a van struck him as he was crossing a roadway. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal pedestrian collision occurred at the intersection of Pasadena Avenue and Arroyo Drive the morning of July 22, 2012. The man was crossing Pasadena Avenue in a marked crosswalk when a van struck him. Police say the driver failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian who was in a marked crosswalk. The elderly man succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. The driver, a 77-year-old man, has not been arrested, but was issued a citation for vehicular manslaughter. The district attorney will decide whether to file charges based on the evidence presented by the police.

What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the result of a sudden and violent blow to the head and the extent of the injury is dependent on the amount of force present when the blow occurs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle accidents account for approximately 17% of reported traumatic brain injuries each year in the U.S.

These types of brain injuries can range from mild concussions to severe and/or permanent brain damage. Following a motor vehicle collision, a driver or passenger may experience a closed TBI, which is when the brain moves within the skull resulting in injury.

Robert Escobar, 55, was injured in an Oxnard car accident, which officials say, involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in The Ventura County Star, the major injury bicycle collision occurred on Victoria Avenue the night of July 14, 2012. Officials say Escobar was riding his bike north on Victoria Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Kris Helms. Escobar was transported to an area hospital where he underwent surgery and remains in critical condition. His daughter, Angela Escobar, says her father is in a coma with broken ribs, a collapsed lung, facial injuries and possible brain damage. Helms has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Latrelle Pearson, 10, and 9-year-old Xavier Williams were fatally injured in a car crash in San Diego, which officials say may have been caused by an unsafe lane change. According to a City News Service report, the fatal crash occurred in the southbound lanes of the Interstate 15 near Escondido, the afternoon of July 15, 2012. California Highway Patrol officials say that a 2002 Dodge Caravan minivan carrying seven passengers including the two boys, collided with a 2008 Scion. The minivan spun out and overturned north of Deer Springs Road.

Latrelle, who officials say was not buckled up, was thrown onto the roadway. Xavier, who was wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected. Both boys died at the scene. The driver of the Caravan, Roy Ruffin Jr., 52, sustained non-life threatening injuries. Four other passengers in the minivan were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment. Lisa Wehus, 24, the driver of the Scion, was not injured. Officials are still looking into the exact cause of the crash, but say that it may have been caused by an attempted lane change on the part of one of the two drivers.

Amir "Nick" Ekbatani, 25, lost a portion of his left leg after a Los Angeles County car accident. According to a news report in The Daily Breeze, the injury motorcycle crash occurred the night of July 14, 2012 at the intersection of Diamond Street and Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach. Police say a cab driver, who was southbound on PCH made a left turn onto Diamond, colliding with the Ekbatani who was riding northbound on PCH. Ekbatani was ejected from his motorcycle and transported to a regional hospital. Doctors repaired his broken left femur, but were unable to save the crushed bottom portion of the limb. His friends say the only reason Ekbatani is alive is because he was wearing a helmet and because he was strong and healthy.

Doctors have given Ekbatani hope that he can be fitted with a prosthetic leg. The family is raising money for Ekbatani's medical expenses.

Two people were injured in a car crash in Santa Ana, which officials say involved two vehicles, the morning of July 16, 2012. According to The Orange County Register, the injury crash occurred at the intersection of Seaboard Circle and Westminster Avenue involving a Dodge pickup and a Toyota Camry. The driver of the Dodge pickup was headed south on Seaboard when he turned left onto Westminster Avenue and struck the Camry, which was westbound. The impact of the collision caused the Camry to land on its roof. The driver and female passenger of the Camry were transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not cited and was released at the scene.

Sann King, 58, was fatally injured in a Laguna Beach car accident when her Mercedes-Benz went off a canyon road, the afternoon of July 13, 2012. According to a City News Service report, the rollover accident occurred off Laguna Canyon Road north of Route 73 in Laguna Beach. Officials say King's vehicle left the roadway and rolled several times. It is unclear what caused her black, mid 1990’s sedan to exit the roadway.

Dominic Durden, 30, a Riverside County Sheriff's Dispatcher, was killed in a Moreno Valley car accident after his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck making a left turn. According to The Press-Enterprise, the motorcycle accident occurred the morning of July 12, 2012 at the intersection of Pigeon Pass Road and Chambray Drive. Police say Juan Tzun Lopez, 24, was driving a 1989 Toyota pickup north on Pigeon Pass Road when he attempted to make a left turn onto Chambray. He struck Durden's motorcycle, which was southbound on Pigeon Pass. Durden, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown off his motorcycle and died at the scene. Lopez was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license.

Efren Ruiz, 49, was killed in a Victorville car crash, which officials say may have been caused by another driver who ran a stop sign at a street intersection. Mark Braley, 53, was killed in a San Bernardino County car accident, which officials say involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a CBS news report, the fatal crash occurred the night of July 7, 2012 in the 300 block of Arrow Highway near Third Avenue in Upland. Police say three vehicles struck Braley. He was first hit by a dually truck whose driver fled the collision site. Two more vehicles then hit him. Those drivers stopped and called police. Braley died at the scene. Anyone with information about this hit-and-run crash is asked to contact Upland police officials.

Chekina Duran, 10, was killed and her father, 56-year-old Antonio Duran suffered injuries in a Los Angeles car crash after an SUV driven by a suspected drunk driver struck them as they were walking at a street intersection. According to a City News Service report, the fatal accident occurred at the intersection of 64th Street and Hooper Avenue in the unincorporated Florence area, the night of July 4, 2012.

Police say Juan Zazares, 58, was backing up a Ford Expedition SUV when he struck a parked vehicle, then proceeded in reverse before running over the girl and hitting her father. Cazares drove away, but was followed by a witness who stopped him and brought him back to the scene. Zazares has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing injury or death, DUI causing injury with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent or greater and assault with a deadly weapon.

Adam Roland, 24, of Glendora, was injured in a Los Angeles County car crash involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the hit-and-run accident occurred on the northbound 57 at Pathfinder Road in Diamond Bar, the afternoon of June 30, 2012. California Highway Patrol officials say Roland was driving a 1999 Dodge Stratus when a silver or white Mercedes-Benz or BMW crossed the double yellow lines into his lane of traffic.

Roland swerved to avoid the vehicle before crashing into a guardrail, going down an embankment and hitting a tree. He suffered major injuries in the collision. The driver of the other car did not stop at the scene. Witnesses to the crash or anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run vehicle is asked to call the Baldwin Park office of the CHP at 626-338-1164.
