Eugenio Lopez, 33, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after his 2007 Yamaha motorcycle struck a Toyota pickup. According to a City News Service report, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred on the 110 Freeway, near Adams Boulevard, in Los Angeles, during the early morning hours of September 10, 2011. The pickup truck had crashed into the center divider before the motorcycle hit it. The victim's bike ended up underneath the truck and both vehicles burst into flames. The authorities report that the collision may have resulted from the motorists attempting to avoid a mattress that was lying on the roadway. Lopez was killed in the accident, while the three occupants of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

Barry Steele, 52, a Caltrans employee was critically injured in a Riverside car accident after he was struck by a suspected drunk driver, the night of July 20, 2011. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the collision occurred on the westbound side of Highway 91 at Van Buren Boulevard in Riverside. California Highway Patrol officials say 21-year-old Brandi Holmes drove her Mazda into an entrance ramp, which had been blocked off by cones for construction work.

Several workers honked their horns to try and stop Holmes, but she continued down the ramp, struck a Caterpillar loader and a concrete K-rail, before hitting Steele. She then got out of the car and started walking away. But workers at the scene held her until police arrived. Steele suffered a broken neck and leg in addition to other injuries. Holmes was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. An investigation is ongoing.

Cynthia Dempsey, 44, was seriously injured in a San Francisco car accident after her pickup truck was struck by a California Highway Patrol car the evening of September 26, 2009. According to a CBS News report, Dempsey suffered major facial injuries in the crash, which occurred, when CHP officers, 25-year-old Blair Hardcastle, and trainee Erik Epting, 19, were responding to a report of a gang fight. The patrol car's lights were flashing and siren was activated as it drove at 70 mph in the number one lane of Highway 12 just east of Highway 101 in Santa Rosa, California.

Juan Gonzalez, 26, was killed and another woman was injured in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of September 20, 2009, the Pasadena Star News reports. The car crash occurred on the eastbound 210 Freeway at Citrus Avenue in Azusa, California Highway Patrol officials said. They are still investigating why the Ford Mustang, which was in the carpool lane, suddenly swerved toward the right shoulder. Officials say Gonzalez, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the Mustang, which then rolled on top of him. The woman sustained injuries but is said to be in stable condition.

Victor John Partnoff, 20, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident the night of September 1, 2009 after he crashed his car into the back of a parked big rig on the 10 Freeway in Redlands, California. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, Partnoff was driving a 2008 Ford Fusion near Wabash Avenue when the collision occurred. San Bernardino Sheriff's Department officials say Partnoff was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. The 18-wheeler was apparently stopped along the right shoulder of the traffic lanes because of mechanical problems, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Goldie Williams Jr, 48, died in a San Bernardino car accident the evening of August 30, 2009 after he lost control of his car and crashed on the 215 Freeway. According to a news report in the San Bernardino Sun, Williams was driving a 2004 Lincoln Navigator south on the 215 Freeway when he lost control of his vehicle while attempting to pass a tractor trailer. Williams apparently veered off the freeway. The Navigator rolled several times. Williams died at the scene while a passenger sustained minor injuries.

One person was hospitalized with injures in an Orange County car accident after an SUV overturned in a single-car accident, The Orange County Register reports. The car accident reportedly occurred on August 10, 2009 when the Dodge Durango hit a tree in the center divider on Edinger Avenue between Brookhurst and Euclid streets. The Dodge SUV flipped on to its roof. The SUV's driver sustained injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

A Corona woman and a Good Samaritan, who was killed February 8, 2009 in a freeway accident after pulling over to help a motorist involved in another crash, has been identified as 39-year-old Roxana Martinez. According to this news report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Martinez, her husband and two children saw a driver veer off the 71 Freeway and roll over. When Martinez and her family stopped in the emergency lane to help the driver of the overturned vehicle, a 1995 Ford Explorer veered into the emergency lane where the family was standing and struck Martinez. She was taken to an area hospital where she died.

What a tragedy for the Martinez family! Here was a woman and a family that out of the goodness of their hearts stopped to help a motorist who was stranded in an overturned vehicle. It is indeed unfortunate that Martinez became the victim of another driver’s apparent negligence. I offer my deepest sympathies to everyone who knew and loved Roxana Martinez. Her two children actually saw their mother get struck and killed on the freeway. This family will be in my prayers.
