At least 12 people were injured after a charter passenger van rolled over after blowing a tire.

According to a news report in The Acorn, the van blew a tire the afternoon of August 7, 2014 on the northbound 101 Freeway near Lynn Road, hit the center divider, struck a tractor-trailer and overturned.

About half of the 12 victims suffered moderate injuries and the others suffered relatively minor injuries, California Highway Patrol officials said.

There were 16 people
traveling in the van. The truck driver was not injured.

It is indeed fortunate that no one suffered life-threatening injuries in this passenger van accident. We wish all the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Crash Statistics

In Ventura County as a whole, 64 people died and 3,319 were injured due to traffic accidents during the same year.

What Caused This Van Accident?

Based on this news report, it appears that the van blew a tire as a result of which the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed. In such cases it is important to look into what caused the tire blowout.

Was the tire defective? Why did the van roll over? Did the van overturn because of a design defect? Did the seatbelts function properly? Was anyone ejected from the vehicle?

If the incident or injuries were caused by a defective product or defective design, the automaker or the manufacturer of the defective product can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused.

Take Precautions for Passenger Van Travel

If you are taking a trip in a passenger van with your family, friends or church group, please take the following precautions:

• Require that everyone in the van buckle up.
• Never drink and drive. Do not get into a van with a driver who has been drinking.
• Check the van’s tire pressure and tread wear and make sure you have a spare tire. Proper tire maintenance is especially important if traveling in a 15-passenger van because they are prone to rollovers.
• Keep children safe in and around your vehicle. Make sure car seats and booster seats are properly installed.
