The motorcyclist suffered a fractured skull, swollen brain and broken neck. He was transported to an area trauma center where he died. The 19-year-old driver of the Cadillac remained at the scene and talked to officials.
No arrests or citations were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family members and friends of this young motorcyclist. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2012 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person died and 61 were injured as a result of motorcycle accidents in the city of Costa Mesa.

Drivers pulling out of public or private driveways must yield right-of-way to oncoming vehicles including motorcycles.
According to California Vehicle Code Section 21804 (a): “The driver of any vehicle about to enter or cross a highway from any public or private property, or from an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all traffic.” Vehicles entering traffic “shall continue to yield the right-of-way to that traffic until he or she can proceed with reasonable safety.”
Based on this report, some witnesses have reported that the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed. We trust officials are looking into whether speed was a factor here.
In addition, we hope they are looking into whether the driver was impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent at the time of the crash. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims can seek compensation for damages including medical and funeral costs, lost future income and loss of love and companionship.
An experienced Costa Mesa personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims’ families in such cases regarding their legal rights and options.
