Escondido Auto Accident Kills Woman

By

Shawn Lynn McFate, 55, of Escondido died in an auto accident on Oct. 3 after her Volkswagen Beetle was struck by an oncoming sport utility vehicle at an Escondido intersection. According to an article in the North County Times, McFate was driving south on Vista Verde Way when a Chevrolet Avalanche traveling west on El Norte Parkway broadsided her.

McFate suffered fatal injuries including blunt impact injuries of the torso and a damaged aorta. The driver of the Chevrolet suffered relatively minor injuries and did not have to be hospitalized.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Shawn Lynn McFate for their irreparable loss.

According to National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) date from 2005, most deadly side-angle crashes were broadside crashes. These are collisions that occur at right angles. About 62.5 percent of fatal side-angle crashes are broadsides.

Side impact collisions are severe because the sides of vehicles offer far less protection compared to the front or the back. There is hardly any barrier or cushion between oncoming traffic and the vehicle’s occupant because the side of the vehicle completely collapses and deforms – pushing broken glass and sharp metal toward them. There is a high risk of death, head and neck injuries, internal injuries and broken bones.

Although police traffic detectives routinely investigate these accidents, it would be in the best interest of the McFate family to retain an experienced Southern California auto accident lawyer to look into what happened. Traffic collisions could be caused by a distracted driver, a driver running a red light, a dangerous road condition or a vehicle malfunction. Retaining the services of a skilled personal injury attorney who specializes in these types of auto accidents will not only help victims and their families understand what happened, but can also help determine who should be held accountable.
