Modesto Head-On DUI Crash Injures Family of Four

By

A family of four suffered major injuries after a drunk driver crashed head-on into their Toyota on Highway 132. The drunk driving accident occurred east of North Gates Road in the Modesto area on October 19, 2008. According to a news report in the Modesto Bee, Gabriel Guzman, 26, Lajady Guzman, 7 and Mia Guzman, 2, all suffered severe injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Felix Parada, 30, suffered moderate injuries in the 10/19/08 crash.

California Highway Patrol officials identified the suspected drunk driver as Ray Servin, 47, of Modesto. Servin has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and showing false identification. He apparently made his $25,000 bail.

Please keep the Guzman family in your prayers. I wish them the very best for a quick and complete recovery from their injuries. All four of the injured are said to be in stable condition.

According to CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Reporting System, in 2006, there were a total of 18 traffic accident related fatalities and 1,333 auto accident related injuries in Modesto. Seven of those fatalities were a result of accidents involving a drunk driver. In Stanislaus County for that same period, there were a total of 68 traffic accident deaths of which 23 were alcohol-related.

I certainly hope this drunk driver, Ray Servin, is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is not only illegal to drink and drive in California, but at a personal level, it is irresponsible, unethical and shows a complete disregard for the life and well-being of others. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23153 (a), it is unlawful for a person to drive a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or any drug – recreational or prescription. It is also criminal negligence to drive a vehicle under the influence and cause an accident which causes serious injury or death to another person.

Servin should be held both criminally and civilly responsible for the injuries he caused to the Guzman family. The family of Gabriel, Lajady and Mia Guzman should certainly consult an experienced California auto accident attorney. A skilled personal injury lawyer will go after Servin and make sure he pays for his negligence and blatant disregard for public safety. The California lawyer will also look into whether there were any dangerous conditions on the highway that might have contributed to the accident.
