Authorities are still trying to identify a man who was killed in a San Diego County auto accident in the Pauma Valley on Route 76 the afternoon of February 17, 2009, according to this ABC News reports in this article. The crash occurred when 55-year-old Edward Cory of Fallbrook lost control of the 2003 Dodge Ram truck he was driving. The westbound pickup struck a telephone pole near Rincon Creek Road before it reentered the street and veered into an eastbound lane where it collided head-on with an oncoming 2005 GMC van.
California Highway Patrol officials say Cory was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown through the windshield. He suffered severe injuries. The driver of the van, whom officials have had trouble identifying, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The GMC van’s driver was apparently not the registered owner of that vehicle.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, who apparently died tragically because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Please keep them in your prayers.
If this news report is accurate, something went horribly wrong in this incident either with the Dodge Ram or its driver Edward Cory. Either there was a serious mechanical or product defect involving the pickup truck or the driver was impaired because of alcohol, drugs or a medical condition. I trust CHP officials are trying to pin down the cause of this accident and specifically why Cory lost control of the vehicle. If investigators determine that Cory caused this accident because he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, then he could be held criminally and civilly liable for the accident and fatality.
