North Hollywood Car Accident Kills Two, Injures One

By

Two people — John Palermo, 27 and Alessandra Giangrande, 25 — were killed and another person was personally injured in a North Hollywood car accident the morning of June 8, 2009, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. The fatal car accident occurred outside 4830 Vineland Avenue near Peach Grove Street, Los Angeles police officials said. Giangrande was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Palermo also died at the scene. A third passenger sustained serious personal injuries, but was conscious and breathing and was taken to an area hospital. The cause of this solo car crash is still under investigation by the LAPD.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of the John Palermo and Alessandra Giangrande, who died in this horrific Hollywood car crash. I offer my deepest condolences to them. I also wish the injured victim the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep the victims and their families in your prayers.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Reporting System, there were 260 fatalities and 27,110 injuries involving car accidents in the city of Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County, 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries were reported in 2007 as a result of car accidents.

I trust LAPD traffic investigators are looking at all aspects of this fatal car collision to determine what went wrong here. The article does mention that Giangrande was speeding. I would also be interested to find out whether Giangrande was wearing a seatbelt. In many of these investigations, police tend to assume that seatbelts weren’t worn if the occupant had been ejected. However, that is not always true. A seat restraint system failure can cause a person to be ejected and suffer fatal personal injuries, while, if the seatbelt had worked, that person may have been alive. If I were a member of Giangrande’s family, I would want to know what exactly happened here.

In any such California car accident case where many questions still remain, it is critical that victims and their families seek the counsel of experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyers who can help them make sense of accident reports, conduct a follow up and make sure that a proper investigation was conducted. In my experience with car accident cases, preliminary reports could end up being just that — preliminary — and sometimes inaccurate. Experienced motor vehicle defect lawyers will also have an expert carefully examine the car for mechanical problems, product defects and other evidence. The car should be preserved in its current condition, unaltered, until it can be examined for such evidence.
