Riverside Car Accident Kills Woman

By

Shari Martinez, 27, was killed in an August 25, 2009 Riverside car accident after she was struck on the 60 Freeway by a pickup truck, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Department. California Highway Patrol officials say Martinez was hit by the truck after getting out of her car, which had broken down on the freeway in Moreno Valley, California. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. The 56-year-old man, who was driving the truck, stopped at the scene. He was not arrested or cited, but CHP officials are continuing the investigation.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Shari Martinez for their tragic, sudden and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your prayers.

Riverside Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were16 fatalities and 706 injuries involving car accidents in Moreno Valley. In Riverside County as a whole, 279 deaths and 9,925 injuries were reported in 2007 as a result of car accidents.

Based on this news report and the Coroner’s report, it is hard to tell whether the driver of the pickup truck was able to stop in time to avoid the collision with Martinez. I trust traffic investigators are also looking into whether the driver of the pickup was distracted, intoxicated or otherwise negligent at the time of this fatal California car accident. If drugs or alcohol were a factor, the driver could face criminal charges. In such cases, where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, an individual determined to be at fault can be held criminally and civilly responsible for the accident and resulting injuries.
