Los Angeles Car Accident Kills 15-year-old Pedestrian

By

Garrett Wheeler, 15, was killed and another person was injured in a Los Angeles car accident after they were both struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in Leimert Park, CBS News reports. The crash occurred the afternoon of December 3, 2009 at the intersection of 50th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard. Witnesses told Los Angeles police that Garrett and the other male were both hit by a compact SUV as they crossed the street. The 15-year-old boy died at the scene. The other victim was taken to the hospital, but the extent of his injuries is not known. Police said the driver of the SUV was uninjured.

My heart goes out to the family of young Garrett Wheeler as well as to the other person who was injured in this deadly accident. I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the teenager. I also wish the injured victim the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep these victims and their families in your prayers.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 traffic accident statistics, 90 fatalities and 2,690 injuries happened in the city of Los Angeles involving dangerous pedestrian accidents. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 210 deaths and 5,095 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents.

Based on this news report, it is not clear exactly where these pedestrian accident victims were walking at the time of the collision. It’s of course, commendable that the driver of the SUV stopped after the accident. The fact that this driver was distraught tells me that he or she did not see these pedestrians crossing the street.

What Caused the Fatal Collision?

But the question is why did the driver not see the pedestrians. Was this person going too fast and therefore could not stop in time to avoid the collision? Was this driver operating the vehicle recklessly or negligently? Was this accident the result of inattention or the driver’s lack of awareness of his or her surroundings? Was he or she distracted? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which prevented the driver from seeing these pedestrians? I hope the victims and their families will get answers to these questions.

If the driver was in fact, at fault for this fatal pedestrian accident, he or she could be held liable. If the accident was caused by a dangerous or defective roadway, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could be held liable. Please remember that any claim against a governmental entity in California should be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury. Victims and their families in such cases would be well-advised to consult with an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer who will better explain their legal rights and options.

I live on Victoria Ave and I heard the impact. I wondered what the noise was.I heard a female voice screaming and crying. When I saw the coroner my heart dropped. When I found out Garrette was 15 and killed by a careless driver my heart broke for his parents and family. I pray for God to bless the family.

  • Garrette Wheeler was my friend and classmate. We’ve shared laughs at Audubon Middle school and Crenshaw High.I’m am deeply hurt that I can only now see him in my memories. Garrette was a good person and I know this because he was my first friend at Audubon . When boys teased me he would tell them to leave me alone, and he was always loving and caring. I hope that he can rest in peace. My condolences to the family, and I would love for Garrete to know that his soul may come and fondle with my dresser drawers if he wants his presence to be known. lol
