Three people sustained serious injuries in a Los Angeles car accident after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a stopped car at a street intersection in West Covina, the evening of December 25, 2009. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the driver was identified as a man in his 30s who was traveling south on Lark Ellen when his 1989 Honda Accord slammed into the back of a 2006 Dodge Challenger. West Covina police say the man was possibly drunk at the time. A female passenger in the rear-ended Challenger, was taken to an area hospital for pelvic injuries. Another passenger in the Dodge was also hospitalized for head and neck injuries.
I’m relieved to hear that none of the injuries sustained in this car crash were life-threatening. I hope and pray that the two injured Dodge passengers make a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep them in your prayers.
DUI Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were three fatalities and 71 injuries reported as a result of alcohol-related car accidents in West Covina. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 268 people died and 5,169 were injured as a result of DUI car accidents during the same year.
Drunk Driving Laws and Liability Issues
It’s a serious crime in California to drink and drive. California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a) states: “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” The same code section also states that it is illegal for any person with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more to drive a vehicle.
If the driver of the Honda Accord is determined to have been driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, he should be held criminally and civilly liable for causing this accident and serious injuries to the passengers of the Dodge. The victims in this case would be well-advised to retain the services of a reputed Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of holding drunk drivers and negligent drivers accountable for their actions. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to advise victims about how their own car insurance policy would apply to an accident involving an uninsured or underinsured motorist.
