Robert Grice, Jr., 50, was killed in a Riverside car accident after his motorcycle collided head-on with a car, near Lake Elsinore, California. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Grice was riding his 2008 Ducati motorcycle on Ortega Highway the morning of December 6, 2009, when a Toyota Corolla crossed the center divide and crashed into his motorcycle. California Highway Patrol officials said the Corolla was traveling at about 45 mph when it swerved into opposing lanes to avoid a slowing vehicle. Grice was thrown off his motorcycle in the collision and sustained fatal injuries.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Robert Grice Jr. for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. This grieving family will certainly be in my prayers.
Riverside Motorcycle Accident Statistics
There was one fatality and 11 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in Lake Elsinore, in 2007, according to CHP’s traffic accident statistics. In Riverside County as a whole, 41 deaths and 562 injuries were reported involving motorcycle accidents during the same year. Also, in 2007, car accidents in Riverside County claimed 279 lives and injured 9,925 people.
Based on this news report, it appears this accident was the fault of the driver of the Corolla, who swerved away from his lane and crashed head-on into Grice’s motorcycle. The Toyota driver was doing 45 mph at the time of the accident, according to the news article. At this point, we do not know what is the speed limit on that highway, at the scene of the accident, and if this driver had been speeding. If that is found to be the case, then of course, the driver would not have been able to stop safely and in time. I trust the authorities are also looking into whether this driver was impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent while driving on that winding highway, where he or she should have exercised more caution.
Wrongful Death Claims
Robert Grice’s family would be well-advised to consult an experienced Riverside car accident lawyer, who will follow up with the official investigation and help hold the negligent party responsible. Depending on the findings of the investigation, this driver could be facing criminal charges. He could also be held civilly liable for Grice’s fatal injuries. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased car accident victims could file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for funeral expenses, loss of wages and other related damages.
