Off-duty Police Officer Dies in Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident

By

Kenneth Aragon, 48, an off-duty LAPD officer was killed in a motorcycle accident the morning of December 3, 2009 after he apparently lost control and crashed. According to a KTLA News report, the accident occurred near the intersection of Fletcher Drive and Larga Avenue in the Atwater Village area. Officials do not believe any other vehicles were involved in this crash. An investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest sympathies to the Aragon family for their tragic, heartbreaking and untimely loss. Kenneth Aragon, a 19-year veteran at the Los Angeles Police Department is survived by his wife, Renee and five children. This is indeed a devastating loss for the family and everyone who knew and loved Aragon. This family will certainly be in my prayers.

Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident Statistics

There were 32 fatalities and 1,158 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in the city of Los Angeles in 2007, according to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, motorcycle accidents claimed 85 lives and injured 2,792 people during the same year.

Based on this news report, it appears that traffic investigators are still looking into what caused this accident. Earlier news reports said that the accident may have been a hit-and-run, but later, officials determined that no other vehicles were involved. There are still several questions here. What caused the officer to lose control of his motorcycle? Was there a vehicle defect or a mechanical malfunction in the motorcycle? Did a dangerous or defective condition on the roadway cause or contribute to this accident? Was there any debris on the roadway, which may have caused Aragon to lose control of his motorcycle? I trust these are some of the questions investigators will be looking into to determine the cause of this tragic accident.

Product Liability Issues

If an auto product defect is suspected in this case, the Aragon family would be well-advised to preserve the motorcycle in its crashed condition, unaltered, so it can be properly examined for vehicle defects, malfunctions and other evidence. If a dangerous or defective roadway caused this accident, then the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could be held liable. A claim against a governmental agency in California must be filed within six months of the accident or injury. Accident victims and their families would find it in their best interests to consult with a reputed Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyer, who has an impeccable record handling these types of motorcycle accident cases.
