Los Angeles Car Accident Involves Drunk Driver

By

A Los Angeles car accident that involved two suspected drunk drivers left three people injured, the Los Angeles Times reports. The DUI accident occurred the morning of January 23, 2010 when a car traveling east on Sherman Way was making a U-turn in the 13800 block and was hit by an eastbound pickup truck. The car then crashed into a parked SUV. The truck’s driver and passenger ran away from the scene of the crash. The driver was, however, arrested shortly afterward on suspicion of felony drunk driving. The female driver of the car and her two passengers were injured. Police are investigating the female driver also, for driving under the influence.

It is indeed fortunate that no one was killed in this horrific accident, given that there were two, possibly, drunk drivers involved. I hope none of the injuries was major or catastrophic.

Alcohol-Related Car Accidents

There were 94 deaths and 2,392 injuries involving alcohol-related car accidents in Los Angeles, according to CHP’s 2007 traffic accident statistics. Countywide, 268 people died and 5,169 were injured as a result of alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2007.

DUI Laws and Liability Issues

It is against California law for anyone to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” If the act of driving drunk causes fatal injuries to anyone other than a drunk driver, the individual could also face gross vehicular manslaughter charges.

A reputed Los Angeles personal injury attorney who has experience financially pursuing drunk drivers will be able to help injured victims file a claim for compensation. If the negligent driver is uninsured or underinsured, a knowledgeable car accident lawyer should be able to explain to victims how their car insurance policy applies to the case.
