At least two people were injured in an Orange County car accident caused by a speeding wrong-way driver on the Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach the morning of January 12, 2010. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, a male driver of the 2006 Mitsubishi tried to drive away from the scene of a multi-vehicle accident near the intersection of St. Ann’s Drive. That’s when Laguna Beach police shot him. The driver sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to an area hospital.
Police officials said the wrong-way driver was going at 80 to 100 mph on Coast Highway moments before the crash, which also involved an Audi, a Ford F-150 and a black Chevrolet. The driver almost hit several others during the busy morning commute when people were heading to work and parents were dropping off their children at school. At least two other people were injured in the car crash, police said. Thankfully, their injuries do not seem to have been life-threatening.
My heart goes out to the injured victims of this horrific car crash. It is indeed fortunate that there were no major injuries or fatalities here. It could have been a lot worse given the speed at which this wrong-way driver was traveling and the time at which this was all happening. I wish the injured victims the very best for a quick and complete recovery.
What Caused this Accident?
There are many unanswered questions here. Why was the driver headed the wrong-way on Pacific Coast Highway at that time of the morning? Was he under the influence of alcohol or drugs? What were the nature of injuries caused to other drivers or pedestrians in the area? The news report also says that the driver was shot because he actually tried to get away from the scene after causing this multi-vehicle wreck. This driver should no doubt, be facing several criminal charges when he gets out of the hospital.
