54-year-old David Moore and 42-year-old Kirk Fletcher were injured in a Costa Mesa car accident, which police say was caused by a suspected drunk driver. The Orange County Register reports that the car crash occurred on the 55 Freeway near 19th Street, when 33-year-old Juan Delgado Jr. lost control of his car, and hit three cars that were stopped at a red light. Delgado was taken to a local hospital with broken bones. Moore sustained facial injuries while Fletcher suffered a cut to his arm. One other driver, 63-year-old Verity Hobbs, escaped uninjured. Police said speed and alcohol played a part in this injury crash.
My heart goes out to the injured victims here. I hope they recover quickly and completely from their injuries.
There were six fatalities and 104 injuries involving DUI car accidents in Costa Mesa, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, 75 fatalities and 1,501 injuries were reported as a result of drunk drivers during the same year.
California DUI Laws
Driving under the influence is a serious violation under California law. California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a) states: “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” The same code section also states that it is illegal for any person with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more to drive a vehicle. In this particular case, it appears that Delgado was driving under the influence and traveling at a high rate of speed.
