One Killed, One Injured in Los Angeles Car Accident

By

One person was killed in a Los Angeles car accident the night of February 18, 2010 after two vehicles collided head-on in the El Sereno area. According to a CBS News report, the fatal car accident occurred on Eastern Avenue, north of Klamath Place. The driver of the vehicle that was headed northbound died at the scene. Los Angeles firefighters extricated one motorist from wreckage. A woman driving the southbound vehicle was taken to a local hospital with injuries. The extent of her injuries is not known.

I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased victim. I also hope the other driver did not sustain any catastrophic injuries. Please keep these victims and their families in your prayers.

Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 268 fatalities and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in the city of Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 deaths and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.

What Caused this Fatal Collision?

Based on this news report, there are more questions than answers as far as this incident is concerned. If there was a head-on crash, one of the drivers obviously went into opposing lanes of traffic and caused the crash. In this case, it is not yet clear which one of the drivers caused this head-on collision. When one driver swerves to the opposing lanes or crosses over, it could be due to many factors.

The driver may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There may have been a defect or a mechanical malfunction in the vehicle. The driver may have swerved to avoid debris on the roadway. The driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Or the accident may have involved other vehicles. I trust traffic investigators are looking into these and another factors while determining who was at fault for this accident.

Claim for Compensation

In such cases, victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the accident and make sure that the victims’ legal rights and best interests are protected. In fatal car accident cases where there is negligence or wrongdoing involved, the families of deceased victims can file what is known as a wrongful death claim seeking damages to cover funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
