A man was injured in a Los Angeles car accident which officials say was caused by a driver who was under the influence. According to a news report in the San Bernardino Sun, the accident occurred on January 30, 2010 when the driver, 40-year-old Miguel Alcaraz, ran a red light at the intersection of Lark Ellen Avenue and Puente Avenue in West Covina. He then crashed into a Honda minivan that was headed west on Puente Avenue. Alcaraz tried to flee the scene of the accident, but was stopped by a police officer, not far from the scene of the crash. The driver of the minivan suffered a broken hand among other injuries, but he is expected to survive.
I’m relieved that the victim did not sustain life-threatening injuries as a result of this car accident. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. He will be in my prayers.
Alcohol-Related Car Crashes
There were three deaths and 71 injuries involving DUI car accidents in West Covina, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, alcohol-related car accidents claimed 268 lives and caused 5,169 injuries in 2007.
A Series of Violations
Based on this news report, the driver in this case broke more than one traffic law by driving under the influence, running a red light and also, leaving the scene of an accident. All these are extremely serious criminal violations under California law. California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.” Motorists are also required to remain at the scene of an accident irrespective of who is at fault and render aid to the injured victim. If Alcaraz did everything that is alleged here, I hope he gets the punishment he deserves.
The victim in this case would be well-advised to consult a reputed Los Angeles car accident lawyer who has a successful track record of holding negligent or drunk drivers accountable. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise victims how a claim for compensation may be filed through their car insurance policy in a hit-and-run accident, or in a case where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
