Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Two

Two people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident after a Los Angeles County Fire Department squad car collided with a Chevy Blazer SUV at an intersection in Hacienda Heights. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that the two cars collided the afternoon of February 15, 2010 at the intersection of Los Robles Avenue and Turnbull Canyon Road. Two occupants of the Chevy Blazer were injured but did not have to be hospitalized. California Highway Patrol officials are investigating the accident.

I hope neither one of the injured victims sustained any serious injuries due to the crash. I wish them both the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 121 deaths and 4,683 injuries involving car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. In Los Angeles County as a whole, car accidents claimed 667 lives and injured 52,229 people during the same year.

Failure to Yield Right-of-Way

In any accident that occurs at an intersection, one of the most important questions to ask is whether one of the vehicles failed to yield right-of-way to the other. It is also important to look into whether there was any negligence or wrongdoing involved. Was one of the drivers impaired, speeding, distracted or driving in a negligent manner?

If the driver of the fire department vehicle was at fault for the accident, then the fire department or the county could be held liable for the injuries caused. I’m pleased to note that the CHP is investigating this case. In any car accident that involves a law enforcement or government vehicle, it is best that a third party carries out the investigation in order to make it fair and objective. When a law enforcement agency investigates one of its own, there is always the possibility of a conflict of interest. Any personal injury claim against a California governmental agency must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.
