Anthony Ha, 18, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after the van in which he was a passenger struck a parked big-rig on the 10 Freeway in West Covina. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Ha was a passenger in a Ford E-350 driven by 41-year-old Jacinto Rodriguez. Officials say he and Ha were related, but their exact relationship is not known. The van was westbound on the freeway, near Holt Avenue, the afternoon of March 25, 2010, when, for unknown reasons, it drifted to the right and collided with the commercial truck that was parked on the shoulder. Ha died at the scene. Rodriguez sustained minor injuries. The big-rig’s driver was uninjured. No arrests were made or citations issued pending an investigation.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of Anthony Ha for their tragic and untimely loss. I offer my deepest sympathies to them. It is indeed fortunate that Rodriguez was not seriously injured. Please keep this grieving family in your prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were five fatalities and 500 injuries involving car accidents in West Covina. In Los Angeles County as a whole, car accidents claimed 667 lives and injured 52,229 people during the same year.
What Caused the Crash?
Based on this news report, it is not entirely clear what caused the van to drift to the right and strike the big-rig. The article does not state that Rodriguez was impaired, fatigued or distracted at the time of the crash. It is possible, in this case, there was a vehicle defect or a mechanical malfunction in the Ford van that caused Rodriguez to lose control. Also, was there a dangerous condition on the roadway? Was the van cut off or run off the roadway by another vehicle? Was the driver of the big-rig parked legally on the side of the roadway? I trust these are all questions investigators are asking at this point in order to determine what occurred and why it occurred.
Ha’s family would be well-advised to consult an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of this crash and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable and the family’s rights are protected. It would also be a good idea to preserve the van in its current condition, in tact, so that it can be carefully examined by an expert for malfunctions, auto product defects and other evidence.
