By

Randy Hernandez, 20, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of February 28, 2010 that involved about four vehicles. According to an Associated Press report, the accident involved a gray Land Rover and three other vehicles and occurred on the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway , near Olympic Boulevard. California Highway Patrol officials said an initial collision may have led to a second one. Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Randy Hernandez for their devastating loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Car Accidents

According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 268 fatalities and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries were reported due to car accidents during the same year.

How Did this Accident Occur?

This news report does not provide information on how or why this multi-vehicle collision took place. There are several questions here that have not been answered. Who caused the accident? How exactly did it occur? Was one of the drivers impaired, distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent at the time? Was anyone else injured in this crash? I trust CHP investigators are examining all these issues and more in order to determine exactly what happened in this case.

Claim for Compensation

In any case that involves multiple vehicles and victims, the investigation can be complex simply because there are usually multiple accounts of what happened. In such cases, it is advisable for those injured in the accident or their families, to avoid talking to insurance adjusters or attorneys for other parties. It is also important to remember not to sign any documents or forms you get in the mail from insurance companies. You don’t want to sign your rights away.

Also, do not enter into any agreement or accept any settlement until you have talked to an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer. In any case that involves negligence or wrongdoing, families of deceased car accident victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking damages to cover funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free and comprehensive consultation to injured victims and their families.
