Three Killed in Bakersfield Car Accident

By

Three people were killed and two others seriously injured in a Bakersfield car accident after two vehicles collided on Highway 46, the night of April 5, 2010. According to an ABC news report, an 18-year-old driver of a Jeep Cherokee, who was traveling east on the highway, drifted into the westbound lane and struck a 2001 GMC Safari head-on. Both the teen driver of the Jeep and the 51-year-old driver of the Safari were killed in the collision, as was a 71-year-old passenger in the Safari. California Highway Patrol officials said two other passengers in the Safari were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.

My heart goes out to the families of all the deceased victims in this car accident. I offer my deepest condolences to the grieving families. Please keep them in your prayers. I also wish the two injured passengers of the Safari the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 29 fatalities and 1,111 injuries involving car accidents in Bakersfield. In Kern County as a whole, 103 deaths and 3,460 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Car Accident Causes

Based on this news report, it appears that the 18-year-old driver may have been at fault for causing the accident. I trust officials are also, looking into how and why the teenager’s vehicle drifted into opposing lanes of traffic. Was he driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs? Was he fatigued or did he fall asleep at the wheel? Was he distracted? Was he driving at a high rate of speed or recklessly at the time of the collision? I trust the official investigation will shed some light on how or why this fatal collision occurred.

Claim for Compensation

In this case, if the driver of the Jeep is determined to have been at fault, the families of the deceased victims in the Safari as well as the injured victims can seek compensation from the deceased driver’s estate and his insurance. The deceased victims’ families could file wrongful death claims seeking compensation to cover medical or funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of companionship, and other related damages. The injured victims could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, physical therapy, pain and suffering, and other related damages.
