Los Angeles Car Accident Kills Man

By

Jesus Rovanni Ibarra, 20, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after the vehicle in which he was a passenger crashed near a Downey intersection. According to a CBS news report, Ibarra was a passenger in a Porsche SUV, which crashed into a fire hydrant at the intersection of Imperial Highway and Lakewood Boulevard early morning on April 7, 2010. Downey police officials found Ibarra’s body on the roadway. The driver of the Porsche fled the scene of the crash, but was later arrested. If you witnessed this incident, please contact Downey police at 562-904-2339.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jesus Rovanni Ibarra for their tragic and devastating loss. Please keep them in your prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were six fatalities and 633 injuries involving car accidents in Downey. In Los Angeles County as a whole 667 deaths and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Hit-and-Run

Based on this news report, the driver of the Porsche SUV crashed the vehicle and then left his passenger to die on the roadway. Leaving the scene of an accident or hit-and-run is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Claim for Compensation

In this case, it is not clear exactly why the initial hit-and-run collision occurred. Was the driver traveling too fast? Was he impaired or driving recklessly? I hope witnesses to this accident will come forward and help investigators determine what occurred here. If the driver of the Porsche caused this accident because of his recklessness or negligence, he could be held liable for his passenger’s death.

In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased accident victims could file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation to cover medical or funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. Families of victims would be well-advised to consult with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will better inform them about their legal rights and options.
