Sacramento Car Accident Injures Three

By

Three people were injured in a Sacramento car accident on Highway 50 the afternoon of April 26, 2010. According to a news report in the Sacramento Bee, an older couple was in a vehicle traveling in the slow lane of the highway, near Sunrise Boulevard. A vehicle driven by a 19-year-old man traveling at a higher speed came up behind them. California Highway Patrol officials said the teen driver in an attempt to avoid a rear-end collision swerved back and forth and ended up striking the left side of the other vehicle. Both the vehicles ended up rolling over. The teenager and the two elderly occupants of the other car were transported to an area hospital. However, their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

It is indeed fortunate that none of the people involved in this crash sustained severe injuries. I wish them all the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. They will be in my prayers.

Sacramento Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 28 fatalities and 3,566 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in Sacramento. In Sacramento County as a whole, 84 people died and 7,874 were injured as a result of car accidents in 2008.

Speed Law

If the details of this news report are accurate, it appears that the young driver was traveling at a much higher rate of speed and misjudged the speed of the other vehicle in the slow lane bearing the older couple. As a result, the teenager may have lost control of his vehicle. California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”

Liability Issues

If the teenager is determined to have caused this accident, then he could be held liable for the other victims’ injuries, damages and losses. In such cases, injured victims could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, hospitalization costs, physical therapy and treatment costs. An experienced Sacramento personal injury lawyer in such cases, will be able to advise injured victims and their families about their legal rights and options.
