A man sustained major injuries in a Los Angeles car accident after his motorcycle was struck by a driver who made a left turn. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the injury crash occurred at the intersection of Hacienda and Valley boulevards in the City of Industry just before midnight on May 22, 2010.

The driver, identified as 39-year-old Mario Dominguez, collided with the motorcyclist while attempting a left turn at the intersection and then fled the scene. Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputies located Dominguez and his vehicle shortly after the crash and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. The motorcyclist suffered several injuries including a punctured lung, broken ribs and liver damage. He is, however, expected to survive.
My heart goes out to this injured victim and his family for what they are going through at this time. I hope he has not suffered any catastrophic injuries in this crash and pray that he recovers quickly and completely.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there was one death and 17 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in the City of Industry. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 114 people died and 2,934 were injured as a result of motorcycle accidents in 2008.
Violations of the Law
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the vehicle, Dominguez, may have made a left turn in front of the motorcycle. I trust officials are looking into who had the right-of-way at the time of the collision. According to California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a): “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”
But more importantly, officials say, Dominguez left the scene of a crash, which is a violation of California Vehicle Code section 20001 (a). If Dominguez is found guilty of hit-and-run as alleged, I trust he will receive the punishment he deserves.
In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to consult an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also explain to victims how their car insurance policy applies to a hit-and-run crash or to an accident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
