A car accident in Los Angeles left a 32-year-old man dead and another man injured the morning of May 22, 2010. The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the accident occurred on the 134 Freeway near Harvey Drive, in Glendale. The 32-year-old driver of a Honda Civic apparently drifted into an adjacent lane and struck a GMC box van from behind. The van went out of control and turned over to its side. The Honda’s driver was killed at the scene. The other driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this deceased victim for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. They will be in my prayers.

Causes and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it is not quite clear what caused the driver of the Honda to lose control of the vehicle and strike the van. Was there a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction in the Honda, which may have caused or contributed to this incident? Was the Honda’s driver cut off by another vehicle? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway?
If an accident is determined to have been caused by an auto product defect, the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective product could be held liable for the accident and resulting injuries. In any case where a vehicle defect is suspected, it would be in the best interests of victims and their families to preserve the vehicle in its current, crashed condition so it can be carefully examined for any evidence of vehicle defects or malfunctions.
