Jose Bazen, 26, was killed in a Long Beach car accident after his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle at a local intersection. According to a news report in the Contra Costa Times, the fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Market Street and Walnut Avenue on May 20, 2010. Long Beach police officials said a driver of a 1994 Cadillac DeVille came to a complete stop at the intersection, but failed to yield the right-of-way and pulled out in front of the motorcycle.

Bazen was riding his 2000 Honda CVR 900, traveling west on Market Street, when he attempted a left turn onto Walnut Avenue. He ended up striking the driver’s side of the Cadillac. Bazen was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Cadillac was identified as 41-year-old Shelley Bryant. She was also injured, but could face charges when the investigation is completed, officials said.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jose Bazen, the fatally injured motorcyclist, for their heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were two deaths and 100 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in Long Beach. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 114 people died and 4,934 were injured as a result of motorcycle accidents during the same year.
Based on this news report, the driver of the Cadillac appears to have failed to yield right-of-way to the motorcyclist. According to California Vehicle Code section 21800 (a): “The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.” In this particular case, I trust investigators are also looking into whether the driver, Bryant, was impaired, distracted, reckless or otherwise negligent at the time of the collision.
Claim for Compensation
If Bryant is determined to have caused this fatal crash, she could not only face criminal charges, but also be held civilly liable for Bazen’s wrongful death. Victims’ families in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced Long Beach personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation to cover funeral expenses, lost future wages, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
