Ventura Car Accident Proves Fatal for Driver

By

Alejandro Gonzalez, 22, was killed in a Ventura car accident after he struck a water truck whose driver, officials said, had lost control of the vehicle. According to a news report in the Ventura County Star, 43-year-old Arturo Cervantes was driving the water truck north on Pleasant Valley Road, near Laguna Road, the morning of May 18, 2010, when he failed to notice traffic slowing ahead. Cervantes then, slammed on the brakes to avoid a collision causing the truck to skid and swerve over double yellow lines into opposing traffic lanes.

Tragic Car Accident

Gonzalez, who was traveling south on Pleasant Valley, could not stop in time and ended up crashing into the water truck. He died at the scene and his father, 55-year-old Bernardo Gonzalez Alfaro, who was a passenger in the car, was hospitalized with serious injuries. But, he is expected to survive. Investigators are looking into whether speed and the wet roadway contributed to this fatal crash.

I offer my heartfelt sympathies to everyone who knew and loved Alejandro Gonzalez. I also wish his father, Alfaro, the very best for a successful recovery from his injuries. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

Ventura Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 21 deaths and 632 injuries involving car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. Also, in Ventura County as a whole, 63 people died and 3,785 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Fault and Liability

Based on this news report, it appears that Cervantes, the truck driver, may not have been paying attention to traffic conditions on the road. Officials are looking into whether a combination of excessive speed and a wet roadway may have led to this accident. I trust investigators are also looking into whether Cervantes was distracted, impaired or otherwise negligent at the time of the collision.

If the truck driver is determined to have been at fault, both he and his employer could be held liable for Gonzalez’s wrongful death and Alfaro’s serious injuries. In such cases, injured victims could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, surgeries and other related damages. Injured victims and their families would be well-advised to contact an experienced Ventura car accident lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable.

What advice would you offer to other drivers in terms of precautions to take on wet roadways?
