A fatal car accident in Riverside killed 69-year-old Roland G. Seneff and injured several others the afternoon of June 10, 2010, the North County Times reports. The car crash happened near Newport Road close to the 215 Freeway when a Hyundai sedan and Mazda van collided. Riverside County Sheriff’s officials say the driver of the Hyundai was traveling north on the Interstate 215 and exited Newport Road, but failed to stop at an intersection, hit a center divider and struck the Mazda van. Seneff was a passenger in the van. Four others from both vehicles were also transported to a local hospital with injuries.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Roland Seneff for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your prayers.
In Riverside County as a whole, 220 fatalities and 8,561 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2008, according to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In the unincorporated areas of Riverside County, 121 people died and 2,615 were injured due to car accidents during the same year.
Laws and Liability Issues
In this particular case, it is not clear why the driver of the Hyundai failed to stop at the intersection. It appears that he may have run a red light. California Vehicle Code section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.” There are also many questions here. Was the driver of the Hyundai impaired? Was he or she distracted or otherwise negligent?
If the driver of the Hyundai is determined to have been at fault for this accident, he or she could be held liable for the crash and the injuries caused. Families of deceased victims can also file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for funeral expenses, loss of future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and related damages. An experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer will be able advise victims in such cases about their legal rights and options.
