Six people were injured in a Fresno car accident after a driver lost control of her pickup truck. According to a news report in the Fresno Bee, the injury accident occurred the afternoon of June 9, 2010. The driver of the pickup was traveling west on San Jose Avenue near First Street, when she struck a Honda with three occupants.
The truck then crossed the road and hit a man who was pushing a girl in a stroller. The pickup dragged the man and girl about 20 feet and struck another car. The male pedestrian is said to be in critical condition at a local hospital, and the child is believed to be in stable condition. The driver of the pickup told officials she blacked out and hit the gas pedal. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to the man and the child in the stroller who seem to have suffered the most serious injuries. I wish them both and the other injured victims the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 33 fatalities and 1,485 injuries involving car accidents in Fresno. Countywide, 127 people died and 3,323 were injured during the same year as a result of car accidents.
Causes and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it is not quite clear how or why the driver of the pickup truck blacked out at the wheel. It is not stated that she suffered a medical condition or had a history of illness. I trust officials are looking into that issues as well as whether she was negligent in some way.
If authorities determine that the driver of the pickup caused the accident and injuries, she could be held financially responsible for the victims’ medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages. In such cases injured victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable.
