Police Officer Injured in Torrance Hit-and-Run Collision

By

A police officer was injured in a Torrance car accident after his cruiser collided with a vehicle he was trying to pull over. The driver of the other car sped away. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the injury collision occurred the afternoon of June 28, 2010 in the northbound lanes of Hawthorne Boulevard near 242nd Street. The officer was attempting to stop the vehicle, hit it and then crashed into a parked car. The officer had to be extricated from the wreckage and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not life-threatening. The other driver was apprehended shortly afterward in neighboring Lomita and arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run.

I’m relieved to hear that the police officer was not seriously injured in this car accident. This could have been a lot worse. I wish the injured officer the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. He will be in my prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were nine fatalities and 480 injuries involving car accidents in Torrance. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Hit-and-Run Law

Based on this news report, it is not clear why the officer wanted to stop the vehicle. However, it is clear that the driver did not want to stop and fled. Leaving the scene of any accident is a serious crime. When the victim gets injured, the fleeing driver is usually charged with felony hit-and-run. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Compensation Issues

In this particular case, the police officer who was on the job will be entitled to workers compensation benefits. But at the same time, he could also claim compensation from the at-fault driver to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, hospital and physical therapy costs. An experienced Torrance car accident lawyer will be able to advise injured victims in such cases about their legal rights and options.
