William Hage, 61, was injured in a San Francisco car accident which officials say involved a driver who made an illegal U-turn at a roundabout and was under the influence. According to a Bay City News report, the injury crash occurred at the intersection of South McDowell Boulevard and Baywood Drive in Petaluma the afternoon of May 27, 2010.
Police said 43-year-old Matthew Billy made an illegal turn before the roundabout, drove over a sidewalk and hit the back of Hage’s 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, causing it to overturn. Hage was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Billy was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI after police determined he was driving under the influence of prescription medication. Apparently Billy had two prior DUI arrests just in April.
I’m relieved to note that Hage did not sustain major injuries in this crash. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were four fatalities and 14 injuries involving DUI collisions in Petaluma, California. In Sonoma County as a whole, 17 people died and 264 were injured as a result of alcohol-related crashes during the same year.
Laws and Liability Issues
It is against the law in California to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs – be it recreational or prescription drugs. California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a) states: “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” Based on this news report, it also appears that Billy made an illegal U-turn at the roadway, which is against California Vehicle Code section 21801 (a).
