Los Angeles Car Accident Kills Two

By

Jason Sorg and Oscar Mendoza, 23, were killed in a Los Angeles car accident after their vehicles collided head-on on the Pacific Coast Highway, the morning of July 16, 2010. According to an Associated Press news report, Sorg was driving his Saturn south in the northbound lanes of the highway at about 80 mph, when he crashed into a Mustang driven by Mendoza. In addition to the fatal injuries, Mendoza’s passenger, 24-year-old Jesus Saenz, sustained a broken arm, leg and a concussion. Several witnesses reported to police that they saw Sorg driving erratically moments before the crash. Police are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

My heart goes out to everybody who knew and loved Mendoza. Both Mendoza and Saenz were members of the U.S. Navy stationed at the Port Hueneme Navy Base. Tragic! I wish Saenz the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. He is fortunate to have survived this fiery collision. Please keep these victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were two fatalities and 134 injuries involving car accidents in Malibu. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Accident Causes

Based on this news report, it appears that alcohol may have played a part in this fatal crash. Sorg’s family members say he may have been despondent because of his brother’s recent death. Authorities initially believed Sorg may have deliberately crashed into the other vehicle, but later said they were also looking into the involvement of alcohol.

Claim for Compensation

In such cases, where the at-fault driver is also killed, family members of deceased car accident victims could file a claim against the at-fault driver’s estate and liability insurance. The same is also true for an injured victim such as Saenz. In such cases, injured victims can claim compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation and other damages.

An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to advise injured victims or their families about their legal rights and options. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims and their families about how their car insurance policy might apply to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
