Good Samaritan Injured in Sacramento Hit-and-Run Collision

By

Daniel Zipay, 28, was injured in a Sacramento car accident after he was struck at an accident site while trying to put out reflective warning triangles. According to a news report in the Sacramento Bee, Zipay was a Good Samaritan trying to help at the scene of a crash at the Interstate 5 to Interstate 80 interchange. The driver of the vehicle that hit Zipay fled the scene. Zipay was transported to a local hospital with a broken leg and pelvis. California Highway Patrol officials are trying to locate the hit-and-run driver and vehicle. The earlier injury crash was caused by a suspected drunk driver who remained at the scene. Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is asked to call CHP investigators at 916-338-6710.

My heart goes out to Zipay and his family for what they are going through at this time. Here was a man who was trying to help other injured victims and was injured himself by a hit-and-run driver. Tragic! I wish Zipay the very best for a quick and complete recovery. He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 28 fatalities and 3,566 injuries involving car accidents in Sacramento. Countywide, 84 people died and 7,874 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Claim for Compensation

In any accident case where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages.

Victims in such cases would be well advised to contact an experienced Sacramento personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure that all the negligent parties are held accountable. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise injured victims about how their auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run collision or to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
