Drunk Driving; A Clear and Present Danger

By

Drunk driving has been a problem since the invention of the automobile. Since the formation of MADD, drunk driving fatalities have dropped by almost 44 percent, but I think it can be agreed upon that a decline in preventable car accident fatalities is not enough to consider the problem solved. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a National Survey of Drinking and Driving Attitudes and Behaviors confirming the importance of MADD’s work to eliminate drunk driving and keep alcohol out of the hands of kids.

MADD’s Reactio

Madd’s national president, Laura Dean-Mooney, found the survey to be in support of her cause: “The survey makes one thing very clear: drunk driving remains a primary threat to the American family. This means that MADD’s work won’t be done until cars are turned into the cure, eliminating drunk driving forever. It is gratifying to see that Americans overwhelmingly support MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.”

MADD’s new campaign focuses on high-visibility law enforcement, ignition interlock devices, and new technology that will automatically determine whether the driver is above the legal limit of .08 and will fail to operate if the driver is impaired.

New Technology

Alcohol — sensing flashlights
These flashlights appear to be the same as those that officers already carry. They contain sensors that can detect alcohol on a person’s breath when used within a foot or so. A green light on the flashlight indicates the detection of a small amount of alcohol, while a red light indicates a particular odor. They are especially useful because officers do not have to administer a breathalyzer test to save a dui accident victim from catastrophic injuries; all they have to do is wave the device close to the driver’s mouth.

New Campaign

Understanding that parents are the number one influence in their child’s decision to drink, MADD launched a new program with the support of Nationwide Insurance called Power of Parents, It’s Your Influence. The program gives parents the necessary tools to talk to their kids about alcohol and the dangers of driving under the influence..

“Ultimately, the survey just emphasizes the importance of MADD’s work,” said Dean Mooney. “We must continue our work to make American families safe from the dangers of drunk driving and underage drinking — lives are at stake.”

Helping the Cause

MADD was founded by a mother who lost her daughter in a horrific alcohol-related wrongful death. Since then, MADD has become the leader in the crusade to end drunk driving, with very positive results. Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys, a California based injury attorney, has stepped up to help MADD in their efforts through various promotion programs, such as raising over $13,000 at their Walk Like MADD event, as well as a hit and run reward program. If you have been injured in an alcohol related car accident, it is important to find an experienced personal injury law firm. They will give you more information on the subject, and help you through this difficult time.
