Mark Westwood, 52, was killed in a Riverside car accident after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. According to a report in The Southwest Riverside News Network, the fatal bicycle accident occurred the night of October 2, 2010 on Grand Avenue near Blackwell Boulevard in Lake Elsinore. It is unclear at this time what may have caused this fatal collision between the bicyclist and the sedan. Westwood was transported to a local hospital where he died the following morning. Authorities are currently investigating the crash.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Mark Westwood. My thoughts and prayers are with them following this tragic car accident.
Bicycle Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but five injuries reported as a result of bicycle accidents in Lake Elsinore. In Riverside County, nine people died and 362 were injured due to bicycle accidents during the same year.
What Caused This Tragic Crash?
It is unclear from this report what may have caused this fatal car versus bicycle collision. There are several unanswered questions in this case. Where exactly did the collision occur? Where was Westwood riding his bicycle at the time? Did he or the other driver fail to yield right-of-way at the intersection? Was this crash the result of a dangerous roadway? Was the driver impaired, distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent at the time of the collision? I trust police are making progress answering these questions as they continue their investigation.
In this particular case, if the driver if determined to have been at fault, then he or she could be held liable for Westwood’s wrongful death. The family of someone killed in a car crash would be well-advised to contact an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer, who will carefully analyze all aspects of the incident and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. Where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, the family of a deceased car accident victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical and funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
