A motorcycle accident in Concord left a police officer with serious injuries the morning of October 4, 2010. The Associated Press reports that the crash happened when a car turned left into the parking lot of a high school striking the police officer’s oncoming motorcycle. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to the injured officer. I hope his injuries are not serious and pray that he makes a quick and complete recovery. He will be in my prayers.
There were 12 deaths and 259 injuries in Contra Costa County due to motorcycle accidents in 2008, according to CHP’s traffic accident statistics. Also, countywide, 59 people died and 3,621 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured motorcycle officer. I hope the reports are accurate and that he will make a full and speedy recovery from his injuries.
California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”
Claim for Compensation
Although it appears that the driver of the vehicle may have made an unsafe left turn, I trust officials are also looking into whether he or she was intoxicated, distracted or otherwise negligent at the time. If the driver of the car is determined to be at fault, he or she can be held financially responsible for the officer’s injuries. Since the officer was on-the-job at the time, he could also claim workers compensation benefits. A knowledgeable
