Tribal Leader Killed in Fresno Hit-and-Run Car Accident

By

William Vega, 75, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident in Fresno the night of October 20, 2010. According to a KFSN news report, Vega, a tribal leader at the Santa Rosa Rancheria Reservation in Lemoore, was struck and killed near the intersection of 17th Avenue and Monie Road on the reservation. California Highway Patrol officials are looking for the driver, who left the scene of the accident. Vega was found on the roadway. No witnesses have come forward yet. At the moment officials have only said that a car traveling north on 17th Avenue struck Vega.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of William Vega, who was apparently a beloved tribe leader and is much missed by his community. My thoughts and prayers are with everybody who knew and loved Vega.

Hit-and-Run, A Cowardly Act

I certainly hope police soon apprehend this driver who struck this elderly man and left him lying on the roadway without help or medical attention. As one of Vega’s friends tells reporters, Vega was left dead in the middle of the road like an animal or a piece of trash. I can only imagine how members of Vega’s tribe must feel to see him disrespected in such a horrific manner. Tragic!

Laws and Compensation Issues

Leaving the scene of an injury car accident is not only a heinous act, but it is also against the law. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

The family of a deceased victim in such cases would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise the family about how their car insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run car accident or to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
