Man Killed in Los Angeles Car Accident

By

Victor Spirov, 39, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after his two-wheeler was struck by a car that was making a left turn. According to a report in The Pasadena Star-News, the fatal car accident occurred the night of November 9, 2010 at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Melrose Avenue in Pasadena. A man driving a Honda east on Colorado made a left turn at Melrose Avenue. Police say the traffic signal was green at the time and that the man was supposed to yield right-of-way to Spirov’s oncoming scooter. The driver told officials that he did not see Spirov on his scooter as he made the turn. An investigation is ongoing.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Victor Spirov. His wife was apparently following him and was at the intersection when he was struck down. Tragic! My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), eight people were killed and 978 were injured in Pasadena car accidents. In Los Angeles County as a whole 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Left Turn Law

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Honda failed to yield right-of-way to Spirov’s oncoming vehicle. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Liability Issues

If the driver of the Honda is determined to have been at fault, then he could be held liable for Spirov’s wrongful death. In such cases, it would be in the best interests of the deceased victim’s family to seek the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held accountable.
