Man Injured in San Francisco Area Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident

By

Tom Lyons, 43, was severely injured in a hit-and-run car accident after his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck in Marin County. According to a news report in the Marin Independent Journal, the major injury car accident occurred the morning of November 14, 2010 when he was riding his bike with friend, Steve Fredricks, on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard between Olema and Platform Bridge Road. Lyons was hospitalized with a broken collar bone, six cracked ribs, a concussion and other injuries. He is expected to survive. The hit-and-run vehicle, which left the scene, is described as a white pickup with a camper shell and surfboard sticking out the back.

My heart goes out to Tom Lyons and his family for what they are going through. Lyons is apparently an avid runner and cyclist and head cross country coach at San Francisco State University. There is no question that this is a huge setback for Lyons given his coaching duties. I hope and pray that he has a quick and complete recovery.

Bicycle Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 141 injuries reported as a result of bicycle accidents in Marin County. Also, countywide, car accidents claimed seven lives and caused 1,152 injuries during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Car Accident

Leaving the scene of a car accident is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Hit-and-run is also inhumane, irresponsible and immoral. In this case, the driver of the pickup appeared to have been hostile to Lyons and other bicyclists according to Lyons’ friend who was riding with him. Then, he knocked down and seriously injured Lyons and took off without even stopping to see if the man was injured or dead. This individual lacked the basic human decency to stop at the scene of this horrific bicycle accident, which based on the news report, he caused. Protecting Victims’ Rights

Seriously injured victims of hit-and-run car accidents and their families are often left holding the medical bills and facing other expenses in the aftermath. Victims in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to advise victims about how their car insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run car accident or to an incident involving an uninsured or underinsured driver.

In your opinion, should hit-and-run drivers face driving license suspensions or revocations?
