Los Angeles DUI Collision Causes Major Injuries

By

A male driver has been critically injured in a Los Angeles car accident involving a suspected drunk driver the night of February 8, 2011. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the major injury car accident occurred on San Gabriel Boulevard near Pearl Street in San Gabriel. A Range Rover, driven by 22-year-old Kai Tian, crashed head-on into a Honda after veering into oncoming traffic. A third car then rear-ended the Honda. The male driver of the Honda was critically injured and had to be extricated from the wreckage. No one else was injured. Tian was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving causing great bodily injury.

My thoughts and prayers are with the critically injured man. I wish him the very best for a complete and speedy recovery from his injuries.

Drunk Driving Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 17 people were injured in DUI collisions in the city of San Gabriel. In Los Angeles County, 258 people died and 4,832 were injured due to alcohol-related crashes during the same year.

DUI Laws in California

It is illegal for any driver to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” The same section states that it is illegal for a driver to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher.

Liability Issues

A victim of a drunk driver may pursue financial compensation for his or her injuries by filing a personal injury claim against the at-fault driver. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and even long-term treatment and care if the injuries are catastrophic.

Car accident victims or their families would be well-advised to seek the counsel of a reputed Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of financially pursuing drunk drivers and holding them accountable. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer should inform victims about how their own car insurance policy might apply to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
