Huntington Beach Car Accident Causes Critical Injuries

By

Two people sustained critical injuries in a Huntington Beach car accident after a car struck another vehicle that was making a left turn at a street intersection. According to a City News Service report, the major injury collision occurred at the intersection of Yorktown Avenue and Newland Street the night of March 24, 2011. The driver of a Lotus Elise was heading west on Yorktown Avenue when it crashed into a BMW that was making a left turn at the intersection. Investigators are trying to determine which one of the drivers caused the accident. Both the drivers were transported to local hospitals with critical injuries. Anyone who witnessed this car accident is asked to contact Huntington Beach police at 714-536-5666.

My heart goes out to the critically injured victims of this car accident. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 12 fatalities and 943 injuries due to car accidents in Huntington Beach. During the same year, 152 people died and 13, 414 were injured in Orange County car accidents.

Who Caused This Car Accident?

Based on this news report, it is not clear which one of the drivers caused this injury accident. There are a few questions here. Did the driver of the BMW make an unsafe left turn? California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Fault and Liability

Did the driver of the Lotus travel at a high rate of speed and hit the BMW? So far, authorities have not been able to locate any witnesses to this crash. Officials are looking for someone who may have seen this accident in order to determine what occurred. I trust authorities are also looking into whether speed, impairment, driver distraction or any other form of negligence caused this car accident.

I actually live on the corner where the accident happened. The Lotus was wrapped around my palm tree. Just an update to your story, police interviewed witnesses on the scene but there were conflicting reports. The BMW (going straight) hit the Lotus (making an unprotected left turn). Both are in ICU at UCI. The driver of the Lotus is in a coma with lots of internal bleeding. No updated info on the driver of the BMW
