Six Injured after Tow Truck Crashes Into Los Angeles Restaurant

By

Six people were injured, one critically, in a Los Angeles car accident after a flat-bed tow-truck hauling a pickup truck crashed through the front of a Yoshinoya restaurant. According to an ABC news report, the injury collision occurred the morning of July 28, 2011 at the intersection of Normandie Avenue and Beverly Boulevard. Police say the driver of the truck lost control of his brakes, ran a red light at the intersection, and struck several cars, before crashing into the restaurant. Six people were taken to area hospitals. One of them sustained life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to the injured victims of this crash. It is indeed fortunate that this truck accident did not happen during peak lunch hour when the restaurant may have been more crowded. I wish all the victims very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 227 fatalities and 25,043 injuries occurred involving car accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, car accidents claimed 554 lives and injured 50,817, during the same year.

What Caused the Brake Failure?

Based on this news report, it appears that the tow truck lost its brakes and went completely out of control, blowing through the red light, crashing into cars and then the restaurant. The question here is: What caused the brakes to fail? Was the truck not properly loaded? Was the brake failure due to an auto product defect or mechanical malfunction? Did the brakes fail because the vehicle was not properly maintained? I trust investigators are looking into these and other issues in order to determine how or why this crash occurred.

Fault and Liability

If it is determined that poor maintenance caused this crash, then the driver and his employer can be held liable for the injuries and damages caused. Car accident victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Victims in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
