Suspected Drunk Driver Causes Los Angeles Car Accident

By

Four people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident involving a suspected drunk driver who was driving the wrong way on a freeway. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the serious injury accident occurred the morning of August 27, 2011 on the 5 Freeway in Pacoima. California Highway Patrol officials say a black Mini Cooper was traveling the wrong way when it struck a white truck. Several vehicles were involved. Three people have been listed in critical condition and one person is in fair condition. Officials say the wrong-way driver suffered minor injuries and has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

My thoughts and prayers are with the many injured victims of this Los Angeles DUI car accident. I wish them all the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.

Los Angeles DUI Statistics

According to CHP’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 83 people were killed and 2,218 were injured in alcohol-related crashes in Los Angeles. During that same year, 204 fatalities and 4,672 injuries occurred as a result of Los Angeles County DUI collisions.

What Caused This Serious Injury Accident?

Based on this news report, officials say that the driver of the Mini Cooper was driving south on the northbound freeway. Investigators have determined that the driver was under the influence at the time. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”

Liability Issues

In such cases, the at-fault driver, in addition to facing criminal charges, can also be held financially responsible for the injuries and damages to victims. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, and other related damages.

Car accident victims would also be well-advised to contact a reputed Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of holding drunk drivers accountable. A knowledgeable accident lawyer will also be able to determine how the victims’ own auto insurance policy applies to an incident where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
